    When I played we had everything because of Jack, while other teams were trying to raise money, we were getting new gear every season. We also saw some stadium upgrades and had a weight room that would rival UVA Wise. We took chartered buses on games that where more than an hour away and it seemed like we had a team steak dinner every other week. The best part was, if you played a good game you got a little "allowance" afterwards.

    So there may be problems in Coeburn, but I assure you JD did much more good than bad. Most of the folks that blame him weren't very good or had kids that weren't good anyway.

    With all of that said, Jack lives in Florida now and doesn't have much to do with Coeburn high anymore.

    I agree, Jack has done nothing but good for all of Coeburn athletics. He is a good guy and he loved to bless people. How in the world did he even up in this conversation??

    Im not sure about VHSL rules, but obviously that takes away any collegiate players Coeburn has had. Taking money for playing is losing your status as an amateur athlete, correct?

    I would not believe it if someone told me this practice was 100% legal in HS.
    Miami has gotten trouble for something like that, with Luke from 2 Live Crew, Alabama's had their issues.

    Stripes, someone explain this one to me;
    can HS boosters pay kids for good games legally?
    No, it's not legal here or any where else in the country.

    That type of situation could definitely haunt a talented players ability to become eligible in the eyes of the NCAA.

    i knew it could not be legal at all

    ANY player who gets paid to play a football game loses their amateur status

    so guest, if you dont want a huge can of worms opened, edit that post

    Re: Horrible Coeburn Coaching

    Ive never heard that Jack gave them an "allowance", but he did give money to improve the program. But to the original point, you can have the best players in the world and a bad coaching strategy and still lose every game. If you don't even try new things and continue what your doing, then the same result happens 99% of the time. Thats basically what Ive seen when Coeburn plays, they do the same exact thing every year, no innovations, no new plays, no one cares if they win or lose. Thats why they need to clean house in the football program.

    Re: Horrible Coeburn Coaching

    I was really impressed with the Coeburn team I saw on film in 91 that defeated Powell Valley. They played hard and with a lot of heart. I think they must have fielded some tough teams back then when the athletes were actually athletes and cared about playing and winning, even if they never really made any deep playoff runs that I know of. Today it's a totally different scenario. I would love to see a Coeburn team that plays with as much determination as those 90s teams did, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon with the way things have looked. I still can't believe how poorly Coeburn has played after moving to the Cumberland. The Coeburn teams "back then" would have absolutely devoured the Cumberland teams we have today.

    Any SW VA team from the late 80s/early 90s would pwn any team from this area over the last 5-6 years.
